Miss Kristin's Teaching Approach

Teaching reading involves a structured approach that begins with phonemic awareness: recognizing and manipulating individual sounds. Next, we introduce phonics and begin connecting sounds to letters. From there, we gradually progresses to building words and sentences, and then ultimately, comprehending texts. This step-by-step process is crucial to building a strong reading foundation, and is exactly what makes learning to read both fun and attainable!

Understanding the phonetic elements of language, like letter-sound correspondence, is fundamental to becoming a proficient reader. While reading books is an important part of the process, it comes after mastering these foundational skills.

We focus our work on sounds, then match sounds to letters and begin to build words, and then basic sentences.

My approach to teaching reading features materials, instruction, and concepts that:

- Follow a logical scope and sequence

- Build from basic to more challenging with intentional progression

- Use step-by-step procedures and tools

- Encourage the learner to practice each concept to independent mastery (with confidence!)
